EDU CAT IO N of any kind may be carried on in a variety
of ways,
but
none has yet been found which surpasses
that
of individual instruction through close personal contact
between teacher and pupil.
This
being an indisputable fact
let us at once recognize the importance and value of traffic
officers and constables as teachers of traffic safety. It is
possible for these men to do more good in the majority of cases
by explaining to an erring operator what he should have done
than by punishing or scolding him for what he did wrong.
Then,
too, traffic officers, if properly trained, can be very
effective as safety speakers for meetings of all sorts.
In
fact,
the school children particularly can be benefited by the school
authorities arranging to have officers appear and give a short
talk before the children at regular intervals. Children absorb
the message and take it home to the family.
Traffic Schools
A traffic school is essential to a complete programme of
traffic education. Such a school should be operated by the
government if there is to be any control over the subject matter
taught.
In
such schools the beginner can learn how to drive
and at the same time can be taught many of the duties and
responsibilities which a courteous and considerate driver
should practise. Moreover, officers and judges can send
