Travellers facing jail for rogue campsites

Ministers claim their tough Police Powers and Protection Bill will get rid of illegal campsites.

It makes trespass a criminal, rather than civil, offence so travellers can be jailed for up to three months for returning to a camp.

It also gives councils greater powers to move travellers on.

A Government source said: "Illegal sites often cause distress to those who live nearby. There is a widespread perception that the law does not apply to travellers, and that is deeply troubling."
