Trolley dash! Aldi store races ahead

Despite a slow start to the project, the work is now progressing fast with workers busy making up for lost time.

The news is not so good though for the Londis convenience store situated immediately across the road and which has been there for 37 years though its owner refused to discuss its future beyond insisting it would continue to open even after Aldi opens its doors.

And now attention is turning to whether there will be a Lidl supermarket up the road at the former Spotted Cow pub at Salendine Nook. This proposal has generated huge controversy with the owners of the Salendine Nook Shopping Centre which boasts a Sainsbury's store launching a petition against it. No clear end is in sight after more than three years in the melting pot after planners gave the green light to Aldi in a shoot-out with Lidl.

The news comes as Aldi, the UK's fifth largest supermarket, is on the hunt for new store locations in Yorkshire as part of its rapid expansion drive.

It says the priority areas where it is looking include Harrogate, Meadowhall,

North Leeds, Ossett, Otley, Scarborough and York.

Aldi, which already has more than 960 stores across the UK, is looking for freehold town-centre or edgeof-town sites that are around 1.5 acres. Each site should be able to accommodate a 20,000 sq foot store with around 100 parking spaces. Ideally the location will be near a main road...
