Two horses which bolted in London in 'serious condition' after six-mile rampage

Defence minister James Cartlidge told Sky News: "There were five horses. They have all been recovered. Three of them are fine, two of them are unfortunately in a relatively serious condition and obviously we will be monitoring that condition."

He added: "They are in a serious condition, but as I understand, still alive."

The minister confirmed the two horses are named Vida and Quaker. The Mirror has contacted the Ministry of Defence for comment.

A British Army statement shared today on X, formerly Twitter, said: "An update following the incident yesterday, where some of our horses were spooked in central London. All three soldiers involved are expected to recover fully and to return to duty.

"Our horses receive the highest standards of care, and those that did not undergo surgery are expected to return to duty in due course. We want to thank everyone who has shown such kindness and concern towards our soldiers and horses. We will provide more updates soon."

Baffled bystanders were stunned after seeing seven horses racing through the capital, with one covered in blood. Ambulance crews treated four people in three different incidents within 10 minutes of each other after the animals ran amok.

Five of the horses managed to get loose and smashed into vehicles, before being brought under control. A white horse collided with a Mercedes people carrier, leaving blood splattered down the side. Another of the horses ran into a tour bus, smashing the windscreen.

The shocking sight led people to question how they ended up running around the streets of London, it was later learned they had escaped during a military exercise by the Household Cavalry.

In an update on X, Lieutenant Colonel Matt Woodward, commanding officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, said: “This morning, a small group of horses were spooked by construction works on a quiet side road where building materials were dropped from height next to them.
