COUNCILLOR RESIGNS. East Leake parish councillor Nick McGowan has resigned from membership, due to family commitments. He was a member in the Castle Ward

As the vacancy arose less than six months before the next parish council election due on May 4, the usual procedure for advertising it is not required and the council can proceed to co-opt if it wishes. They have invited Mr Michael Sharpe to fill the vacancy.

FUNERAL. The funeral is taking place today (Wednesday) of one of East Leake's most respected and well-loved residents, Keith Hodgkinson, who died on December 30.

Keith, as he was known to many residents in the village, was a founder member of East Local History Society, in 1979.

After retirement he became a much more active supporter of the Society, becoming chairman for six years. He did a lot of research and wrote several books and a number of articles, often in collaboration with others.

He gave talks to members on a variety of local history topics, often stepping in at the last minute if a speaker had not appeared.

Keith played an active part in the activity he helped to found, and he was very keen to encourage other people to do research and to write about it.

He was very interested in archaeology and had set up a small group within the society to do a small-scale dig. Sadly Covid intervened and this never took place.

He will be very much missed by the Society - apart from anything else his general historical knowledge was so useful to other members.

The Society committee have already decided to institute an annual memorial lecture in his name.

The funeral was being held at Loughborough Crematorium today.

PAVILION OPENING THANKS. Everyone, parish councillors and public, involved in the official opening before Christmas of the new sports pavilion at the Costock Road sports ground has been thanked by parish council chairman Kevin Shaw.

He said the event was a great success and the input by those involved much appreciated.

The pavilion is now in full use and continues to draw messages of support from its users.

DEVOLUTION DEAL. Parish councillors at East Leake have been updated by their county council member Matt Barney on the Devolution Deal involving his authority, Nottingham City Council and the Derbyshire City and County Councils.

In a report to members he said in the last few months leaders of the four authorities had forged together a deal which will bring significant funding and powers to the region over the next 30 years.

In his report, Coun Barney said the Government had confirmed the £1.14 billion devolution deal is on offer for the East Midlands, covering Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, which will provide the region with a guaranteed income, stream of £38 million per year over a 30-year period and opens the door to significant further funding in key areas such as transport and the environment.

The parish council were told in Coun Barney's report that covering an area home to around 2.2 million people, the East Midlands combined authority would be one of the biggest in the country, enabling a practical joined approach to thinking and decision making.

He said the bones of the deal have been agreed in principle amd were being reviewed in a wider public consultation.

ELECTION ID. Rushcliffe Borough Council Customer Services sites - including East Leake - are now available to process Voter Authority Certificates in person that enable residents without photo ID to vote at polling stations at this May's elections.

The council has said it is aware of the barrier some online forms can present so the Customer Service Centre on Gordon Road in West Bridgford is available during opening hours of Mondays and Thursdays 8.30am-5pm and Fridays 8.30am-4.30pm to help guide residents through the process.

And they have confirmed that Appointments are also available to complete the process in person at our Customer Service contact points including East Leake.

Residents need to have their date of birth and national insurance number to hand and already be registered to vote before they arrive at any site.

They can otherwise apply online for the certificate at voter-authority-certificate. service.gov.uk The council is reminding all residents they may already have a form of photo ID that is acceptable.
