FRIENDS OF THE SMITH Emily Malcolm, curator of transport and technology for Glasgow Museums and based at Riverside Museum, has a fascination with our maritime past. An expert in models of ships, her research highlights the manufacture of ship models and their use in industry. This work has led to the book Glasgow Museums, The Ship Models (2019). While the golden age of shipbuilding on the Clyde is long gone, Glasgow Museums has amassed a collection of more than 600 ship models to remember it by. One of these - the Aquitania - is the subject of Emily's illustrated talk at the Smith Art Gallery and Museum on October 26. One of the finest Cunard liners ever to steam across the Atlantic, the Aquitania was launched in 1913, in the same era as the White Star line's doomed Titanic. The model Emily will be exploring has an exposed crosssection on one side, showing many details of the ship's interior. The monthly Stirling Smith lectures are on Wednesdays at the Smith, Dumbarton Road, at 7.30pm, doors open 7pm. Admission by cash at the door, £5 for adults, £4 for Friends members and £2 for students. Admission includes tea or coffee and biscuits. A brochure with details of the lecture series is available from the Smith

Our speaker Lilliane McGeoch, one of our members, talked about risk assessment. Although most injuries occur at home, many are work related and about 20 years ago risk assessment arrived and is now compulsory, the aim being to minimise the number and severity of these events by identifing them before they happen. Commonly this involves falls, slips, trips, risk of allergy, lifting, working at height and the effects of weather. Questions include likelihood, how serious the consequences might be, the risk being different for each individual. Risks identified must be acted upon and how it will be dealt with recorded. Despite the work involved it has proved effective and injuries have decreased.

CARSE OF STIRLING ROTARY Last week the club got together at the Golden Lion Hotel for a speaker's evening and meal. The hotel excelled themselves with a delicious meal. No less impressive was the after-dinner speaker, Rotarian David Brydie, who gave an interesting reflection on his time and experiences to date as a member of the club. Anyone who'd like to join us in socialising whilst helping people, both locally and abroad, can visit on a Wednesday night...
