Speaking on the 30th anniversary, Regis - one of the heroes of the Sky Blues Wembley triumph - said he had wonderful memories of the occasion, but admitted he couldn't wait for it to end

The former England striker, who passed away at the age of just 59 in 2018, made 614 league appearances, amassing 158 league goals, most prolifically at West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City.

But the only trophy he won in a 19-year career was the FA Cup with the Sky Blues.

Asked what his abiding memory of the famous victory over Tottenham was, he said: "The final whistle... because it's hard work, especially after going through the half hour of extra-time in a game that's ebbed and flowed.

"You never know in football what's going to happen until the final whistle and it's done.

"They had some great players and a couple of half chances and you're thinking it could change, so when the final whistle came it was fabulous because we knew we'd done it."

The bond amongst all those involved in that glorious day had remained strong over the years, he said. "The club brings us together and it has been wonderful to reminisce about old times.

"We have great friendships, led by John [Sillett] and George [Curtis], who set out the way we played and the atmosphere at the football club.

"The team spirit and willingness to run for each other was incredible and the game stands out in all of our careers. And to share memories is always a pleasure.
