What is ``SCUP'' and so
what?

By the time you read this column many of you
will be watching snow flakes fall outside your
window; however, I am writing this piece in late
summer ± no snow flakes. Looking back at my
summer, I have picked out professionally-
related experiences that have relevance to the
readers of this column.
I have begun the transition back to the
classroom after 29 years of higher education
administration. My professional life this summer
has been devoted to catch-up reading,
technology-centered re-tooling, participating in
two conferences and consulting-related activities.
It seems that the most memorable moments
were when I was able to participate in a
planning conference and interacting with
potential planning consulting clients. Both of
these activities involved effective planning as
the central core.
When you first think of a library building
renovation ± or planning for a new library
building ± where does the library professional
turn? Of course, there are the annual new-
building-project issues in the library literature
that provide leads to institutional Web sites,
and there is the relatively recent Planning
Academic and Research Library Buildings by
Leighton and Weber (ALA, 1999). ALA
publishing has a variety of other up-to-date
titles on this subject. If you are in need of more
than self-help, you might wish to find a library
planning consultant. The only online listing of
library planning consultants that I am aware of
is the American Library Association's Library
Administration and Management (LAMA)
Division's ``Library Buildings Consultant
List''[1]. To look at a simple listing of
consultant names is free; however, to go beyond
the names comes at a one-time cost of $10; or
30 days for $20; or $25 for unlimited access
until June 30, 2003. Also, this site provides
useful information about the process of
selecting a consultant, and contains a brief
bibliography about the subject. Unfortunately,
the 33-item list begins with materials published
in 1960 ± with the vast majority of the items
being published before the 1990s.
A future column on academic library building
planning might be in order; however, in this
column the question is, ``Where might other
people on your campus, such as institutional
and facility planners, be looking toward?'' Yes, it

Abstract
Library planners often have the problem of finding
institutional or organizational support to assist them with
their building projects. The Society for College and University
Planning (SCUP) is a professional association composed of
university planners, architects and administrators. SCUP
addresses three campus planning-related functions: aca-
demic planning, institutional decision making and resource
planning, and facilities planning. The centerpiece of its
activities is a large yearly conference in which members
convene to share innovative ideas and developments in
planning. This year's conference in Boston was highlighted
by a discussion on the future of resource planning in non-
traditional universities like The University of Phoenix.
