'Yes, that does seem pricey, I'll put it in the till again, sorry, it's £15', she smiled back at me.

I tried to contain my excitement at this bargain price, considering I could buy five litres of ice cream and a box of tea bags for the same sum in a supermarket. On the way out, I checked the menu taped to the door and discovered the original ludicrous figure of £18.50 was indeed correct.

Somehow, I'd performed a Jedi mind trick on another reasonably minded human, who'd simply thought, 'he's right, how can that cost that much', and charged me a lower fee.

This was not some exclusive hotel in central London, but a caravan in a field of a stately home serving hot drinks to people admiring the summer blooms.

In the past, I might have put the ice creams back, but a cost-of-living crisis and small children is not an easy pairing.

Flake £4.99, anyone?

If they've asked for ice cream, it's difficult to explain that, thanks to the destruction of an international supply chain in an illegal war, labour shortages because of Brexit and a pandemic crippling the economy, they can't have a raspberry ripple.
