A full-page advert in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle from April, 1972, summed up the wide appeal of the popular store as it marked its 40th anniversary

'I like Wengers - because I can buy everything from a mower to a ready-made suit under one roof.'

'I like Wengers - because I can buy everything from a bracelet to a nappy under one roof.'

'We like Wengers - because we can buy everything from a school uniform to a racing bike under one roof.'

'We like Wengers - because we can get easy credit, good prices and brand leaders under one roof.'

While many folk will remember the store trading in the imposing French chateaustyle building that's located towards the bottom end of Grainger Street, the brand could trace its origins back to 1932 when Mr Sam Wenger set up a humble one-room tailoring business specialising in ladieswear on the city's Pink Lane. Sam's daughter Hilda Marcus would go out to sell the garments, and the business gradually picked up enough momentum for the pair to set up a showroom on Westgate Road. The move to Grainger Street came in 1965, with Wengers taking over the fine Victorian building, which dated from 1888 and had been the long-time home of the Newcastle and Gateshead Gas
