You'll Never Walk Alone and Ferry Cross The Mersey.

Gerry, who fronted the Merseybeat band, died after an illness related to a heart infection.

Liverpool radio presenter Pete Price confirmed his death in a statement on Twitter yesterday.

He wrote: "It's with a very heavy heart after speaking to the family that I have to tell you the Legendary Gerry Marsden MBE… has sadly passed away."

'The best' Gerry's daughter Yvette said: "We are absolutely devastated… he was our hero. He was a fabulous, fabulous man and a fabulous grandad and husband.

"He had an infection in his blood and it attacked his heart very very quickly but he died peacefully."

Sir Paul McCartney led the tributes, tweeting: "My sympathies go to his wife Pauline and family. See ya, Gerry. I'll always remember you with a smile."

Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish tweeted: "Saddened to hear of Gerry Marsden's passing.

"You'll Never Walk Alone is an integral part of Liverpool Football Club, never more than now."

And former Liverpool FC star Robbie Fowler tweeted: "A Liverpool legend and singer of the best anthem I've ever heard.... enjoy the golden sky." Originating in Liverpool in 1959...
