It's not for nothing that the region has been the holiday choice for the Royal family for over 170 years. "All seemed to breathe freedom and peace," said Queen Victoria, a sentiment which still holds today

Long hours of sunshine and relatively low rainfall – the Cairngorms act as a natural rain barrier – have made the region a food and drink paradise but add to that an abundance of fairytale castles, plus Aberdeen's distinctive civic architecture carved from sparkling granite, and you have a cultural offering that is enhancing the East Coast's reputation for arts and events.

There's also a range of fantastic visitor attractions which make it easy for travellers who prefer to plan a full itinerary.

VisitAberdeenshire is encouraging holidaymakers to make this their next destination and here's 10 must-visit sites for some holiday inspiration.
