Three areas in the south east of England have recorded the highest coronavirus death rates, reports The Mirror.

Castle Point and Tendring recorded the most deaths in comparison to their population sizes, following Folkestone and Hythe, according to official figures.

The list of top twenty death rates features several areas around Essex and Kent, where the British variant of Covid began spreading in December.

The 'Kent' variant spread from the south east to become the most dominant strain of the virus in the UK, then spilled out to Europe and other parts of the world.

The latest infection rate figures show nearly half of all English areas are still recording rises in Covid infection rates.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 130 41% have seen a rise in case rates, 175 56% have seen a fall and 10 are unchanged.

Corby in Northamptonshire continues to have the highest rate in England, with 155 new cases recorded in the seven days to March 27, the equivalent of 214.6 cases per 100,000 people.

This is unchanged on 214.6 per 100,000 in the seven days to March 20.

Rotherham has the second highest rate, up from 137.1 to 170.7, with 453 new cases.
