What were you doing on this day 20 years ago?

If you were a Newcastle United fan, you'd be enjoying - what would become - one of the most famous games in the club's history.

The Toon's 5-0 win over Alex Ferguson's Manchester United has been well-documented.

(And today's Chronicle has an eight-page supplement recalling the momentous game).

To recap, Kevin Keegan's team sent a 36,000 St James' Park crowd into meltdown as goals from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, newly-arrived Alan Shearer and, famously, Philippe Albert sent the Red Devils packing.

It was the high point of the Toon's heady 'Entertainers' era.

But, away, from football, what else was going on in the world?

After a troubled 14 years of marriage, and a barrage of increasingly damaging headlines, Charles and Diana divorced.

This was also the year mad cow disease appeared in the news as it was announced that BSE was "the most likely explanation at present" for 10 cases of the condition CJD in people aged under 42.

And there was also the darkest of days in Dunblane, near Stirling in Scotland, when gunman Thomas Hamilton murdered 16 children and a teacher after walking into the town's primary school.
