It's 50 years since 1967, the so-called 'summer of love' and The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album.

The trendy young things of that era will today be entering old age as that most evocative of decades recedes into history.

But if the 'swinging 60s' conjure up images of The Fab Four, LSD and hippies, life here inthe North Eastwent on much as before.

Our selection of photographs depict an area that was still industrial at heart.

Coal mining, shipbuilding, and heavy engineering, although under pressure from cheaper foreign competition, were still going strong in the region.

Thousands of lads, leaving school at 15, would enter the world of work through apprenticeships as their fathers had done.

Those with a handful of O-Levels might become white-collar workers in an office or at the bank.

Unemployment was low and there were plenty of jobs - for men and women.

Meanwhile, encouraged by those likeNewcastle City Councilleader T Dan Smith, there was a rush to knock down much of the 'old' and replace it with the 'new'.

In Newcastle, the 1960s saw swathes of Victorian-built buildings - both good and bad - torn down.

In their place, often came new concrete constructions, some of which have themselves since fallen victim to the wrecking ball.

The Beeching cuts, instigated in 1963, would see the North East lose nearly 100 railway stations and stops.

Rail routes were axed, communities were adversely affected, and thousands of railway jobs...
