A labyrinth features a single continuous path which leads to the centre whereas mazes have multiple paths which branch off so you get lost.

Mazes are thought to date back to Egyptian times and were created to keep looters away from tombs. You may remember learning about the most famous early labyrinth at school. It was said to house the mythical Minotaur at Minos Crete although really this was more likely to be a maze otherwise he would have easily escaped!

Hornbeam Maze at Arley Arboretum, Worcestershire
There is a large, really fun Hornbeam Maze at Arley Arboretum in Worcestershire.
Designed in a square shape and created from hornbeam hedging, the maze is packed with twists and turns to keep visitors guessing.
There's a wooden platform in the middle which you can climb and look out over the maze you've just conquered -before trying to find your way out again!
It's great to visit in the school holidays when Arley often hosts special events for kids, such as fairy trails and dinosaur quests.

Maze World at Dobbies, Atherstone
Maze World is home to one of the UK’s largest collections of permanent mazes.
There are six mazes to discover, each one themed around the continents. Visit the Canadian Hedge Maze that's shaped like a maple leaf, a very traditional English Hedge Maze and an African Reed Fence Maze shaped like a rhino’s horn.
Look out for the Antarctic Labyrinth made out of over 600 white stones, Japanese Trellis Maze created from 400 panels and climbing plants and Australian Wooden Pole Maze that features eucalyptus.
