'Back with a bang' -Bob Moncur reveals he could have been seriously injured during the Fairs Cup victory parade; The last man to lift a major trophy for Newcastle United explains it could have been the last act of his life.

'In my mind it wasn't a massive occasion' says Bob Moncur. He is talking modestly about Newcastle's last major trophy win, over 52 years ago. The 1969 Fairs Cup, a forerunner to the modern era's Europa League.

It was the club's first ever foray in to European football. The year prior they had finished 10th in the league, but qualified for Europe fortuitously.

Only one team per city could take part which meant the likes of Everton, Arsenal and Tottenham all missed out because they finished below Liverpool and Chelsea who represented the cities of Liverpool and London respectively in that year's competition.

Newcastle of course went all the way and won their two-legged final against Hungarian outfit Ujpest Dozsa. "Big Jack Charlton used to call them Upsy Daisy!" joked Moncur, talking on our NUFC history series, Chronicled.

When the victorious team landed with the cup at Newcastle Airport, the day after their 6-2 aggregate win, Moncur received a tap on the shoulder.

"Somebody came up to me and said 'The boss says you've got to take the cup out the plane first.' I'm going 'What do you mean, out the plane first' I thought it was a mickey take, but said 'Okay, if I must'."

Moncur obliged and speaking about the moment in 2021, on Episode 18 part two of our history series, the emotion is still present in his voice. "I t still makes me emotional yet", he admitted. "It was like in a foreign country, you know how the heat hits you This noise came from the old Newcastle Airport building, people were all lined-up in there, all over. Roaring. I remember thinking: 'This is important'.
