Balham shooting: First picture of young man shot dead in 'front garden' of hostel

Matthias Poleon was shot in the front garden of the hostel he lived in on Bedford Hill, Balham last night Thursday, June 17.

Police and the London Ambulance Service rushed to the scene after two gunshots were heard by passers by at 10.48pm.

Matthias was rushed to hospital but sadly died less than an hour later.

In heart-breaking scenes this morning Friday, June 18, family members including his mother, dressed in funeral attire, and his cousin stood at the scene in tears.

Friends also appeared at the crime scene and left flowers at the scene.

“When I woke up this morning I didn’t think I would be standing here at a crime scene in the pouring rain and my cousin dead," one mourner at the scene told My London.

“We just don’t know why this has happened. It’s so unexpected.

“I don’t want this to be just another black boy dead in London. It makes you realise just how fragile life is.”

Later on Matthias’ family took to social media to pay their respects. His cousin posted a photo of Matthias with the words: “Cuz I’m going to miss you dearly. RIP.”

Forensics were at the scene throughout the day and removed a car from the front of the hostel where the attack...
