Blu Bambu has been boarded up as [pounds sterling]750,000 of work progresses to transform the Big Market boozer into a new Newcastle nightspot.

The 1,300-capacity venue closed without warning after 11 years in November 2013 when operator PBR Leisure called in administrators.

And Northern Irish firm Hathor Inns Limited is looking to turn it into a Filthy McNasty's bar and club - the fourth in the UK.

Now the venue's distinctive glass exterior has been removed and the hole covered in bright white boards, hiding the work going on inside.

Sarah Smith, partner and head of licensing at Sintons, who is working with the company, said: "This is another example of a leisure operator based outside of the region choosing to set up a base here, bringing new jobs and investment to the North East.

"Newcastle is a thriving city which has recently seen -- and will continue to see over the coming months -- the opening of several new venues which add significantly to its renowned leisure scene."

A premises licence application was handed to Newcastle City Council last month, with the County Tyrone company revealing that "bars will operate over basement, ground and first floor level, with a pavement cafe area to the front."

Entertainment will include films, dance performances, and live and recorded music, while "hot food and beverages may be offered from time to time".

Alcohol sales will be between 10am and 3am seven days each week...
