A trusted social club secretaryplundered more than [pounds sterling]11,000from the company's accounts in just 10 days.

Jill Thompson was standing-in for theBlyth United Services Club'snormal secretary while he was on holiday and helped herself to the cash before Christmas last year.

A court was told the 54-year-old made four unauthorised withdrawals from the company's account, totalling [pounds sterling]11,410.

But her scam was quickly discovered and Thompson was arrested, claiming in interview she had been desperate to pay-off debts.

Now, the thief, of Durban Street, Blyth, is facing a possible prison sentence after she pleaded guilty to one count of theft by employee atSouth East Northumberland Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor, Sue Baker, said Thompson had began working as the temporary secretary on December 5 last year.

She said: "The Blyth United Services Club is run by a committee but they pay staff to run the club, that includes a secretary.

"But, during the secretary's holiday, this lady stands in for him and she's paid to do that.

"During last December, four unauthorised withdrawals from the club's accounts were made, which amounted to [pounds sterling]11,410.

"These were during the time this lady was covering. She transferred the money into her own account."

The court was told that, when Thompson's deceit was discovered, she was interviewed and admitted what she'd done to the police.
