Boom in people looking for 'animal jobs' as lockdown ends

According to recent estimates, a total of 3.2 million households in the UK have acquired a pet since the start of the pandemic, and now Britain’s whirlwind love affair with pets is leaving its pawprints on the jobs market.

Exclusive data from Totaljobs shows that plenty of jobseekers thinking of changing careers and becoming part of Britain’s new wave of pet professionals. Candidate search data has revealed that jobseekers are increasingly interested in fetching positions that allowing them to keep the nation’s pooches well pampered with interest in ‘Dog Grooming’ roles up by almost two-thirds 65% compared to March last year.

Pet-related responsibilities have also seen noticeable rises in search interest with terms such as ‘Dog Warden’ up by more than a third 38% and ‘Animal Keeper’ by 70%.

With plenty of more pets now around, the search data also sees a greater interest in roles that make sure they remain happy and healthy in the long term. Searches for veterinary roles are also up by a third 33%.

The performance of the animal care sector is part of a wider recovery of the jobs market that Totaljobs has recorded this month. Vacancy numbers on the website are now up to 78% of the numbers seen in March 2020.
