Brand new Oxford Street food court given green light on site of souvenir shop

The 19-stall food court is expected to house a range of restaurants from Chinese, Mediterranean and Iranian food, architects ZD Designs said during Tuesday’s meeting, and provide seating for 75 customers, who will be able to eat food both on and off site. Cllr Nafsika Butler-Thalassis called it an “excellent application”

She said: “I want to comment on how important it is that instead of the very poor quality of retail that we have at the moment in that location, how much more it will improve the area by having this food court and I think it will be of huge benefit to Oxford Street and to residents”. Addressing concerns the development would lead to a loss in retail space, one council official said it fit within planning guidelines and would complement the character of Oxford Street.

He said: “It encourages customers to dwell in the area, get something to eat and move onto the shops.” He also said he was “confident” the recirculating ventilation system, which runs dirty air through carbon filters to remove odour, would stop any cooking smells from escaping the premises from exhaust...
