British travellers have hours to renew passport or they may face extra fee

Defending the steep prices, the Home Office claims it operates on a non-profit basis and promises that the extra cash will go towards improving services, reports Wales Online.

Guy Hobbs, from Which Travel, suggests acting fast, saying: "If you've been meaning to renew your passport, today is your last opportunity to beat the price hikes."

Applying from overseas or for urgent passport needs incurs higher costs. However, passports remain free for individuals born on or before September 2, 1929.

Before last year's price surge, passport fees had been on a five-year freeze, with a standard adult online application setting you back £75.50.

Mr Hobbs said: "The cost of renewing a passport has jumped significantly in the last few years, with this latest price hike following hot on the heels of a hefty 9 per cent rise just last year."

He added: "While these price rises may well reflect rising production or processing costs, the UK passport is now amongst the priciest in Europe."
