MPs want a ban on the sick practice of bring "hunting trophies" from endangered animals into the UK.

It's believed that 400 parts from endangered animals such as elephants, lions, hippopotamuses, leopards and rhinoceroses come into the UK each year.

British hunters bring home tusks, trunks, feet, ears and tails after killing the animals overseas.

So far more than 100 MPs have signed a Commons motion demanded the Government halt imports of hunting trophies "as a matter of urgency".

They includeNorth Tyneside MP Mary Glindon, who said: "This is directly harming the conservation status of some of the world's most endangered wildlife.

"Britain is a nation of animal lovers and most people regard trophy hunting as cruel, archaic and immoral.

"The UK should show global leadership in helping to stop trophy hunting. A ban on trophy imports is an important step to bringing trophy hunting to an end."

Conservationist and comedian Bill Oddie is backing the campaign.

Mr Oddie said: "Elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs and rhinos are all fighting for their lives. We could see all of them go extinct within a generation.

Wildlife experts say trophy hunting is causing the populations of Africa's big cats to decline, and hunting and poaching of elephants is outpacing their rate of reproduction.

Earlier this month,TV host Piers Morgantook on a hunter on his Good Morning Britain show.
