Charlie Wyke has thanked Sunderland fans for their patience and support as he looks to repay them this season.

Wyke had a difficult debut campaign on Wearside, blighted by knee injuries which meant it did not really get going until the new year. He was only able to score four league goals in addition to one on his Football League Trophy debut -- a disappointing return for a player who hit double figures in each of the previous four seasons.

Despite that, Sunderland's fans have been very supportive, appreciating his hard-working style. Some players say they cannot hear the crowd during matches, but 26-year-old Wyke admits it does make a difference.

Now with an almost full-pre-season behind him, he is fit, confident and ready to start repaying them with goals.

"Towards the end of last season the fans were brilliant with me, so I can only thank them," he said. "It does help when people sing your name, you get a real boost of confidence. I think everyone would agree.

Charlie Wyke appears to have belatedly found his confidence - and that's good news for Sunderland

"Every player who has a song about them or hears the crowd sing, it definitely does help."

Despite missing the opening two matches with an ankle injury, Wyke has made a good start to 2019-20. He scored on his first appearance, as a League Cup substitute at Accrington Stanley, and his first start --Tuesday's 2-1 win at Rochdale.

In between time, his wife gave birth to their first child.

Sunderland began the campaign with 1-1 drawsagainst Oxford UnitedandIpswich Town, but are looking for their fourth consecutive victory when they host winless Wimbledon on Saturday.
