The three annual conferences of IIAS and its sub-entities — IASIA and EGPA — are
behind us! This concourse of major events — all of which took place during the sum-
mer — put our Secretariat in Brussels under pressure but their efforts were not in vain
as the overall outcome was quite positive.
The Institute held its annual conference in Ankara from 23 to 27 June on the
theme of ‘International Aid and Public Administration’. In absence of the President,
prevented from attending due to air transport problems, the honourable Minister
Geraldine Fraser-Moleketti, IIAS Vice-President for Africa, had the honour of presiding
at the Opening Ceremony.
Even though the number of participants in Ankara was relatively modest and thus
somewhat disappointing, attention must be drawn to the quality of the Conference
presentations and discussions. As has already been pointed out in the most recent
issue of our Chronicle in September, the new format envisaged was to be tested at
this Conference. However, the evaluation of the Ankara Conference underscored the
need to re-examine the traditional format of IIAS conferences, but in a different light
than the one envisaged for Ankara.
On 22 June 2008, the day before the Opening Ceremony of the Conference,
statutory meetings were held for the Programme and Research Advisory Committee
(PRAC), Finance Committee, Editorial Committee as well as the Executive Committee.
The meeting of the latter, in the absence of IIAS President Franz Strehl, as mentioned
above, was chaired by Albert Hofmeister, Chairman of the Executive Committee
Delegation. Some of the subjects examined were mentioned earlier in the most
recent Chronicle, such as the new website, the updated list of critical governance
issues as proposed by PRAC, finances, or yet again the Ankara conference format.
Due to a lack of available space, it is not possible to develop other important points.
However, to summarize the essentials, the Executive Committee also took note of the
performance objectives set out by the Directorate General to implement the
Institute’s strategy. These objectives relate to the following points:
