Couple quit one unhealthy habit together and now save £400 every month

Paul and Karen Whitney had been smokers for 45 years between them when they decided to stop for good

They were smoking about eight cigarettes a day when Paul, 50, started having chest and arm pains.

The couple went to A&E at Leighton Hospital in Crewe where Paul was taken to the cardiac ward with a suspected heart attack.

While in the ward, Paul met Jo Harding, a specialist nurse from the hospital's CURE programme, who talked to him about the benefits of quitting smoking, reports the Manchester Evening News.

With the hospital's support, Paul and Karen decided to quit smoking and haven't looked back since saving around £5,000 a year.

"It was hard to give up. I found it really tough and without the help from the hospital team I wouldn't have done it," said Paul.

"They helped me a lot with things to try to take my mind off it, supported us with the patches and everything else we needed."

Paul, from Winsford, Cheshire, had been smoking for 15 years while Karen, 46, had been living with tobacco dependence for 30 years. They spent about £105 a week on cigarettes.

Paul said: "Just think of the money that you're saving by not smoking it's unbelievable. It's crazy how much they cost. When you think how much you're saving, it's a lot of money over the years."

After finding out he had a heart attack, Paul got help at the Royal Stoke University Hospital where he had an operation to put in two stents.

The couple also got help from the CURE programme, which gave them nicotine patches. They both really want to make sure they never smoke again.
