Work is nearly finished to replace lampposts that were flattened when the Beast from the East struck earlier this year.

Several street lights alongWhitley Bay seafrontwere blown over when the ferocious weather hit the region at the end of February, while a number of others were taken down as a precautionary measure.

North Tyneside Council has now replaced almost 100 lampposts along the coast, from Spanish City to St Mary's Lighthouse, and work is close to completion.

Coun Carl Johnson, cabinet member for the environment and transport, said: "This has been a very efficient and thorough piece of work to put right some of the damage caused by the powerful storms we endured at the end of February.

"Other councils experienced similar incidents across the North East when the storm arrived and it was a very challenging week for all concerned. Our staff and partners responded quickly after being alerted by local people and we weren't prepared to take any chances with further columns being blown over.
