Darren Bent praised Josh Maja and Jack Ross as Sunderland came back from behind to beat Charlton on the opening day of the 2018-19 season.

Ross made changes at the break asthe Black Catstrailed, bringing Jerome Sinclair on to partner Maja up top, switching the formation from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2.

It worked, withMajagetting an equaliser before Lynden Gooch headed the winner in the 95th minute.

On Ross' changes, Bent said: "The subs were great. First half they weren't great but they did end that half the better side. They had a great chance at the end and didn't take it.

"But Ross adapted well. He saw what Charlton were doing - especially that first half where they were getting in behind so easily and they were getting the freedom of the pitch.

"He changed to a three at the back and it helped because it gave that initial back two some extra protection. All of a sudden Charlton couldn't get in behind, couldn't attack in numbers and Sunderland looked a lot more solid.

"They built from that base and got themselves back into the game and then went on to win it."

Maja's equaliser came at a critical time.
