The Highway Code is not the law - but that does not mean drivers should ignore the motoring bible.

Recent research suggest more than three quarters of UK drivers have not revisited the Highway Code since passing their test.

Here are 16 rules from the Highway Code you should never ignore,courtesy of the RAC.

These areas are typically found outside schools, hospitals, and stations for emergency services.

Drivers should not be slapped with aPenalty Charge Notice(PCN) however unless there is a sign detailing the restrictions.

The Highway Code tells drivers to always give priority to buses, coaches and trams when you can do so safely.

It is not a legal requirement but not only is it courteous, it avoids any confusion for larger vehicles entering the flow of traffic.

Drivers are forbidden by law from crossing double white lines in the middle of the road where the line nearest to us is solid.

The only situations it is permitted in if entering adjoining premises or a side road, or if safe, to overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle travelling at 10mph or under.

Passing the vehicle on the left-hand side is undoubtedly frowned upon.

There is no law against the act itself, but it can count as a offence under a charge of careless or even dangerous driving.

Motorists who refuse to move out of the middle lane is one of the biggest gripes for drivers.

Following new laws introduced in 2013, police officers now have the power to hand out on-the-spot fines of [pounds sterling]100 and three penalty points for middle-lane hogging.

The Highway Code stresses safe driving requires concentration and to avoid distractions when at the wheel.

These include loud music, trying to read maps, inserting a CD or changing the radio station, arguing with passengers, eating, drinking and smoking.

The RAC guide stresses all vehicles must display parking lights -- sidelights -- when parked on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit over 30mph.

This one is a law, and offending motorists are eligible for a fine if caught out.

Most motorists will argue they are the victims rather than the parties responsible in this scenario.
