Dwight Gayle believes the famous Newcastle United No 9 shirt is starting to fit nicely around his shoulders - primarily because of the passionate support he and the team have received from Magpies fans.

Close to 6,000 United supporters made the journey down to Oakwell on Tuesday night, and both of Gayle's goals came at the end which houses the travelling Toon Army.

That brace took Gayle's tally to 11 for the season in just 11 Championship appearances.

And Gayle admits the adoration he has received from United fans has made settling into Rafa Benitez's side so much easier.

"Obviously I know the history the shirt holds and the pressure that's going to be on the shirt but I'm enjoying it at the moment and luckily it's going well right now," the [pounds sterling]10million summer signing from Crystal Palace said.

"Hopefully it continues too.

"You have some sort of expectations of how you'll be received if you score but it's been brilliant.

"The fans here are unbelievable - we've got 6,000 away from home on a Tuesday night in the Championship, which is unheard of.

"It felt like a home game because they're singing louder than the home fans.

"If that continues then confidence will only grow and we'll just keep getting better."
