DWP WASPI update for 3.6million victims as '3,000 will have died since report published'

Last month the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman PHSO took the "rare but necessary" decision to ask Parliament to intervene over complaints that the Department for Work and Pensions DWP had failed to provide accurate, adequate and timely information about state pension reform. The PHSO had said that the Department for Work and Pensions was guilty of maladministration and recommended compensation of around £3,000 -with potentially 3.6 million victims

In today's letter signed by MPs Wendy Chamberlain, John Penrose, Debbie Abrahams, Joanna Cherry, Caroline Lucas and Jim Shannon it highlighted a huge petition and said: "We are writing as a cross-party group of MPs following the publication of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman's report into women's State Pension age changes on 21st March 2024."

"The report made clear recommendations to the Department for Work and Pensions, asking ministers to apologise for their failures and to swiftly compensate the 3.6 million women affected by bringing proposals to the House for consideration by Members. In the weeks since, more than 200,000 people have signed an open letter to the Leader of the House, asking for an urgent debate and vote on the Government's proposals, alongside any alternative proposals from Members."

"The Department has now had the entirety of the Easter recess to consider the contents of the report. However, as Parliament returns this week, 3,000 women will have died since its publication. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has tasked Members with ensuring that justice is delivered."

"Therefore, we are asking you to urgently commit to: a outline a formal proposal from the Government to compensate all affected women b provide Members with the opportunity to debate and vote on the Government's proposal, alongside any others proposed by Members."
