East Lothian beauty spot goes up in smoke as fire crews rush to put out BBQ fire

Firefighters were pictured on Monday (June 20) as they worked to extinguish the blaze at Gullane beach after the dunes caught alight. Large plumes of smoke were seen heading upwards from the beach, with an area of the beauty spot cordoned off to allow crews to remove hot coals left on the ground

In a warning issued on social media on Tuesday, East Lothian rangers said the fire had thought to have been started by the BBQ coals being ditched on the dunes.

With further warm weather set to arrive in Edinburgh and the Lothians this week, they said:

"Thanks to the quick response of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, a dune fire at Gullane Bents was quickly brought under control yesterday. It is thought that the fire had possibly started after someone tipped hot fire coals into the dunes.

"Campfires and BBQs are very appealing, especially in great weather, but after a prolonged period of dry weather we are are at HIGH RISK OF FIRE and therefore strongly advise against them.
