The snaps show a mysterious face, etched into Hailes Quarry Park. It's understood to depict a "hermit" resident of the city from the 19th century, reports the Daily Record

Amongst the greenery of the park, the sculpture is said to be a tribute to a solitary man who lived in the space while it was a functioning quarry. Once a bustling hub of activity, the quarry became active back in 1750.

It provided employment for up to 150 men annually, while churning out up to 100,000 tonnes of stone. Local tantalising stories narrate that a hermit took residence within the recesses of a cave located within the quarry, and although some workers claim to have to witnessed him - his existence has remained largely a mystery.

Following a severe flooding incident in 1902, the quarry ceased operation and subsequently transformed into a dumpsite lasting up until the 1970s.
