Edinburgh eatery with 'hidden bar' closes just months after opening

Locals noticed the unit seemed to have emptied out in recent weeks, with both ventures now closed down. A new business already appears to be getting ready to open in the building.

According to Google, both the restaurant and the basement bar are now "permanently closed". Social media accounts for the eatery have now been disabled.

John Duncan, owner of The Howlin' Hound, previously described the restaurant as a Scottish inspired upscale and casual tapas eatery with a "secret passage" to an unknown underworld.

Speaking in January, John said: "Gatto, the Spanish word for cat, keeps the animal theme alive with the dog upstairs and the cat down below.

"After successfully opening The Howlin' Hound that serves Scottish tapas, we have introduced Don Gatto's speakeasy which is accessed through a bookcase with a secret lever and disguised keypad. The basement contains a low lit cocktail bar, retro pictures and an instagram tunnel.
