Edinburgh local rages at pavement parking 'costing us all' as cars break crack slabs

Taking to Twitter to express her frustration, Jane Carnall shared a photo of a shattered Starbank Road pavement in Newhaven, followed by a series of pictures of various cars parked half through the pavement's width

Showcasing how some parked cars leave half of the pavement for pedestrian use and others take up too much space for a pushchair or a wheelchair user to pass by, Jane said: "We're so used to seeing this kind of thing.

"The expectation is that, of course, drivers get to use the pavement to park their cars, and pedestrians should be grateful for just enough space to get by."

Recalling how her elderly great-aunt, who sadly passed away in 2001 at the age of 93, had a real difficulty in the last years of her life getting from her front door to the main road due to the badly damaged pavement, Jane spoke out on how unsafe pavement-parking can be.

Jane said: "Pavement parking is important to tackle both because when cars block pavements, they make them unsafe or impossible to use for pedestrians - especially people using walking aids, or in wheelchairs, or pushing buggies.
