Edinburgh locals settle debate over pronunciation of city neighbourhood

Interestingly, the area, located east of the city between Craigentinny and Lochend, has some residents claiming that the letter T is silent - "Res'alrig", while others assert it ought to always be pronounced. The vibrant discussion was initiated on the Lost Edinburgh Facebook page

In the ongoing debate, a majority seems to favour the silent T, although consensus is far from being reached. Some individuals even humorously suggest pronunciation might well hinge upon one's level of intoxication.

Lending itself to the heated controversy is the fact that Restalrig, translating to "ridge of the miry land" with its roots in northern dialect and Scottish terms, has appeared under various spellings such as Lestalryk, Restalric, or Rastalrig over the course of history - but regardless of version, there's an ever-present T nestled within.

Adding to the chatter, Roy Miller Cummings stated in Lost Edinburgh page: "Always silent when I lived in Edinburgh".
