Edinburgh Pentlands catch fire as emergency crews race to put out BBQ blaze

Following warm and sunny weather shining over the capital this week, those responsible for keeping the regional park safe asked those using it to be aware of fire risks

In a message on social media on Saturday (June 25), rangers shared how emergency fire crews had been forced to race up to the hills after the ground caught alight.

Video from the scene showed the charred and burnt out ground that was still smoking following the blaze, with a large section of the hillside damaged.

The clip also showed the remnants of the disposable barbecue responsible, with rangers adding a similar incident occurred just hours later as "a result of children playing with matches."

A warning read: "Please DO NOT light fires on our sites this weekend: the ground and wind conditions mean that there is a severe risk of wildfire. If you must have a bbq (and we would prefer you don't), ensure that it is on stony ground well away from bare soil or vegetation, and that it is fully extinguished with water and disposed of appropriately after you have finished.
