Edinburgh pupils hold fundraising 'derby' match to honour Christopher Cowe

Two teams made up of players from both Balerno and Currie High School will take part in the fundraising match - Christopher Cowe Community Shield - on Wednesday June 15 at 7:00pm on the 3G pitch adjacent to Currie Rugby Club

Christopher was popular with both sets of students having attended Balerno but had grown up with childhood friends that attended Currie High with him having played for Currie youth football as a young boy.

The teams will play the match with the hope of raising money for two charities - Cardiac Risk in the Young and the Big Hearts Foundation.

Christopher, who was 15 when he passed away without warning in January 2021 of undiagnosed myocarditis, was an avid fan of the Jambo's and was a huge fan of football.

It is hoped that the match will raise funds that will go towards providing heart screenings for young people at both Currie and Balerno High.

Father Ross Cowe, 49, praised his son's friends and the communities of both schools for coming together and playing this 'local derby' in Christopher's memory.

He said: "This will be a good opportunity to remember Christopher and is a great credit to his friends for pulling this together.

"Christopher was a huge fan and hopefully he will be looking down and seeing his friends remembering him in this way.

"Next Wednesday his school friends have organised a footy match between Balerno HS which he attended and Currie HS where he had a number of friends.

"It is a bit of a local derby match but the Christopher Cowe Community Shield will be played in a good spirit.

"The match was organised by a couple of boys from both high schools.

"Christopher had played with Currie's boys club when he was younger so had connections at both schools.

"Christopher was close with some of our neighbours sons and one of the lads will be playing in goals.

"It was an idea where there could be a joint focus from both schools with raising money for two...
