Edinburgh Waverley passengers caught in huge queues as trains cancelled by crash

Late on Thursday evening, an HGV crashed onto the rail tracks of the East Coast Mainline, causing the busy route to be closed this morning as a salvage operation was launched

The lorry driver was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for the treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Dramatic pictures from Edinburgh Waverley show queues spreading all the way out of the station as passengers are now being advised to leave and return at 2pm.

The images show one continuous queue of people stretching all the way through the station. We spoke to someone at the scene who now says the queue had spread all the way onto Waverley Bridge.

Commuter Christopher Armstrong said: "It seems that there is one big long queue for all the cancelled trains, people are being pointed towards the back to the queue which is now snaking from the concourse next to Platform 1 & 2, through the station and up the exit ramp to Waverley Bridge.

"People seem to be hot and bothered, it's warm in the station and outside, but given the length of the queue, the majority are surprisingly patient.
