Edinburgh woman amazed to discover 200-year-old newspaper during renovation

Gemma Johnstone-Cooke, who lives in the Edinburgh suburb of Portobello, was restoring her house, which dates back to the 1800s, and came across some items which were hidden behind the walls of her home

The most eye-catching find was an old newspaper delivery slip, which appears to be from 1859 based on a date printed on the paper.

The slip, which is nearly two centuries old, is in remarkably good condition considering its age, with the text and dates on it still easy to make out.

The piece of paper advertises different newspapers that were available for home delivery from a local newsagents in the borders town of Galashiels.

Some of the titles which were advertised are no longer in circulation, such as Leisure Hour, which was a general interest periodical published during the Victorian Era from 1852 to 1905.
