Edinburgh woman gave up office job of 30 years to start brand new career as carer

Katrina Early, her brother-in-law Archie Kerr and Margaret Bourhill, who is married to Katrina's cousin all work at Aaron house, a 65-bed nursing home offering care for elderly residents and older people with mental health conditions and cognitive challenges

Speaking about her change of career, Katrina explained she had worked in an office role for over three decades until both of her parents were diagnosed with dementia. Caring for her mum and dad for four years, she decided to leave her job and start a new career as a carer at the home in Penicuik, which ended up being alongside her other family members.

Eight years on from the decision, she has now taken an admin role at the home, and said: "I love that care is at the heart of my role. I've been through the process of moving loved ones into a care home myself, so I can empathise with family members and draw on my own experience to help them. It's nice for them to know I've been in their shoes, and I understand."

"I'm not just the office person, I know what the carer's job role is as well. When a resident comes to live here, they often start to think of the staff as their family and I would always think of them like my grandparents. We all work together here to make sure we look after our residents as we would want our own mums and dads to be looked after."

For her brother-in-law Archie, a career at the Penicuik home began when he was made redundant from a printing firm after working there for 23 years.

Taking up a job at Aaron House as a kitchen assistant, that was supposed to be a temporary role soon turned permanent.

He added: "I never thought I would have moved into a care role in my later life, but I love it! I was a bit wary at first, because I'm nervous of meeting people, and I was nervous about the one-to-ones with the residents. Now I love a...
