The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle so Eid ul-Fitr, which is also spelled as Eid al-Fitr, starts after a new moon is sighted. As it was not sighted on Monday April 8 evening it is expected to be sighted this evening Tuesday, meaning Eid -the "festival of breaking the fast" -will be on Wednesday, April 10. If the crescent isn't sighted this evening, then Ramadan will go on one more day and Eid will be on Thursday, April 11

The HM Nautical Almanac Office provides religious data to the armed forces, religious groups and diary/calendar manufacturers. In the latest published maps it says telescopic sightings of the crescent moon with small, conventional amateur-sized telescopes are possible on Tuesday from northern and central Japan, north-eastern Russia, southern parts of the Philippines, Borneo, western Indonesia, southern Madagascar and northern parts of South Africa.

The agency warns additional magnifiers may be needed to find the crescent moon on Tuesday from central Russia, eastern China, eastern Mongolia, South-East Asia, western Indonesia, the central Indian Ocean region, northern Madagascar and southern parts of Africa except South Africa, central parts of both Argentina and Chile.

Sightings with the naked eye under excellent conditions should be possible from western Russia, central Asia, India, Pakistan, northern parts of the Indian Ocean region, south central Africa and central parts of South America. The agency produced maps also suggest Easy sightings should be possible on Tuesday from western Asia, Europe including the British Isles, the Arabian Peninsula, the northern half of Africa, the Americas except the southern half of South America and the eastern Pacific Ocean region.
