Denmark star Christian Eriksen says he "feels better" after suffering a heart attack on the pitch on Saturday.

He required CPR after collapsing in his national team's group stage match against Finland, with doctors confirming that he was "gone" for a short period.

Eriksen's teammates formed a ring around him as he received treatment. There were fears that he would not recover but medics were able to revive him and he was taken to hospital to recover.

Inter Milan star Eriksen thanked fans for their well-wishes in a short statement released through his agent to Italian sports paper Gazzetta dello Sport, reports the Mirror.

"Thank you, I won't give up. I feel better now -but I want to understand what's happened," he said.

I want to say thank you all for what you did for me.

Eriksen sent a short message to his Denmark teammates from hospital to reassure them that he was fine.

They went on to finish the match, which they lost 1-0.

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen says his medical results have so far been normal.

"The exams that have been done so far look fine," Boesen told a news conference.

"W e don't have an explanation why it happened. I can't answer that question.

"I didn't see it live, I saw it on screen when it happened. You saw the same as me. No explanation so far."

Confirming that Eriksen had a cardiac arrest, he added: "He was gone.

"We did cardiac resuscitation, it was a cardiac arrest.

"How close were we to losing him I don't know, but we got him back after one defib, so that's quite fast."

On the decision to finish the match he said: "I don't think the right decision was to play the game.
