Freddy Shepherd believes that Mike Ashley can still run Scottish crisis club Glasgow Rangers without being the majority shareholder.

And he feels that the Newcastle United owner is doing the Ibrox club a "favour" by keeping them afloat.

With Rangers currently second in the Scottish Championship, promotion to the SPL will make the Glasgow club into an even more valuable asset for Ashley.

Shepherd told the Chronicle: "They've lost a fortune and Ashley has had to put money in to help them out.

"He can't buy any more shares. But he's now the Royal Bank of Rangers!

"He's loaned them money, he's not controlling them by shares, he will control them by money."
