Gateshead boss keen to sample comforts of home again

The Tynesiders made the International Stadium a fortress on their way to the National League North title

Mike Williamson's men won 18 of their 21 league games on home soil as they romped home by seven points.

Their last competitive outing on May 7 brought a 2-1 win over Hereford on Tyneside in front of a 4,000-strong crowd.

That contributed to an average league attendance of 1,271 - Gateshead's highest since they lost Football League status in 1960.

With the feelgood factor extending into the new campaign, the club hopes the growth in attendances will continue.

Wins will be harder to accrue in the rarefied atmosphere of non-league's top table but a promising start was made on the opening day.

Goals from strikers Paul Blackett and Adam Campbell saw the Heed race into an early two-goal lead at Dagenham - only to be denied victory at the death.

Barnet finished sixth-bottom last season but have improved under manager Dean Brennan and started this year with a 2-0 success over tenman Halifax Town at the Hive.

For Gateshead player-manager Williamson it is the chance to play in front of the Heed Army on a familiar surface.

He said: "We are looking forward to being back at the International Stadium, where we know the pitch and the dimensions.

"We will enjoy being back in front of our home fans and we have to be on our mettle and compete in every area.

"Barnet will be a tough test. They are really effective in both boxes and I really like their front four.
