Government to offer 'full cash refunds' on train and coach tickets for travel under old Christmas rules

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps revealed to Good Morning Britain that the government will look to cover the travel expenses of those who were planning to travel over the five-day Christmas relaxation period, which has since been downgraded across England to Christmas Day only.

Speaking to hosts Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins, Shapps was quizzed on the Dover closure as well as the original plan for the five-day relaxation period for Christmas.

In the midst of explaining one answer to the hosts, Shapps revealed he is bringing in measures to "fully compensate" anyone who has purchased coach or rail tickets for travel during the old travel period between December 23 and December 27.

"We wanted to be able to provide something over Christmas for people and that's not going to be the case.

"I'm really, really sorry. We all are... Nonetheless, we must keep people safe.

"I haven't mentioned this anywhere else, anyone who has booked tickets for coaches or trains during that period of the 23rd to the 27th when they hoped they'd be able to travel, I am organising to get them full cash refunds.

"I'll be saying more about it later on today, so people don't lose out on that front."

Tickets will only be refunded if they were purchased after the travel window was announced on November 24 and before it was amended on December 19.
