After settling down to start a family with his wife, who he refers to on social media as simply 'Mrs D', two years ago, Dion might have had to put the brakes on . Dion first made a name for himself as a footballer in the Premier League for Manchester United, Coventry City and Aston Villa as well as Cambridge United, Barnet, and Norwich City, with four caps for England.

Although his football career lasted many years, it wasn't without setbacks. Shortly after joining Man United, Dion broke his leg and was out of action for six months. Then, while playing for Aston Villa in 1999 he suffered an injury which could have left him paralysed. Dion crushed a vertebra in his neck, but thanks to specialist surgery he was back on the pitch after three months.

Writing for The Birmingham Clinic, where specialist surgeon Andre Jackowski treated him, Dion said: "The specialist told me that I had broken my neck... I just broke down in tears because I thought: 'Hold on a minute, what about my football career' I told the doctor I have to play again, I need to play again.

"He told me, 'You can either let me do this operation and I will get you back playing in three or four months – or we'll be looking at wheelchair brochures'. That put my life into perspective. It hit me when he said I may never walk again, play again or even feed myself."
