But to get a place to run in the London Marathon, you can't just sign up and have a space secured. Demand for places from people wanting to run the London Marathon is so high that places are secured through a ballot, which opens the day before the previous marathon takes place

You only have six days in which to submit yourself for the public ballot too, so it's important to act fast. The ballot for the London Marathon 2025 will open on Saturday, April 20, and will close on Friday, April 26.

What is the London Marathon Ballot

You can apply to run the London Marathon through the public ballot, where names will be drawn at random after the ballot closes. Everyone has the same chance of getting a place, making it the fairest way to manage the huge numbers of people applying to run every year. If you are successful, you’ll then be allocated a place in the next London Marathon.

How to get a second chance at securing a London Marathon place

If you live in the UK, you can choose to donate your entry fee to support the work of the London Marathon Foundation during the ballot process. This will automatically enter you into a second ballot, giving you a second chance at getting a place in the next London Marathon. Your entry fee, should you get a place through the ballot, is also then reduced from £69.99 to £49.99.
