How to keep dogs cool in hot weather

The four-legged beasts normally love frolicking in pleasant weather, but when the temperature gets too high, it can cause them to feel uncomfortable. Throughout the day, it should be checked that your dogs are remaining healthy and happy

Plan your walks

Walking your dog during peak temperatures would not be sensible as they struggle in the heat even more than humans. They should instead be taken for a gentle walk either very early in the morning or very late in the evening.

You should also plan a route where regular breaks can be taken in the shade to prevent overheating.

Keep them hydrated

Water is vital for your dog no matter the weather. However it becomes even more important on a hot day to keep them hydrated, so you should take a bottle of water and a bowl for them to drink from when you head out together.

Don't burn them out

Despite the warm weather, it remains important to keep your dog active to maintain a healthy weight. However, during the warmer spells, it would be a good idea to use up their energy in different ways.

Less strenuous physical and mental activities should be adopted to avoid them getting too hot and bothered. Ideas for what you could do include hiding toys in a small area, freezing their treats in food puzzle toys to keep them stimulated and using toys or treats to encourage them to spend more time in the shade, or even a paddling pool.
